Sexual harassment in public transport has emerged as a pressing issue in Dhaka City, posing significant threats to the safety and well-being of women and children, both by strangers and acquaintances. This legal analysis examines the prevalence and various forms of sexual harassment incidents, including verbal abuse, unwanted touching, and stalking, and its profound impact on victims and public transport usage.
The study evaluates the existing legal framework in Dhaka City to combat sexual harassment and explores the effectiveness of current laws and regulations. It highlights the need for strict rules and regulation for offenders and advocates for amending outdated and defective provisions in sexual harassment laws. Rather than solely focusing on severe punishment, the study emphasizes the importance of judicial reforms and attitudes to tackle the issue effectively.
To address the escalating cases of sexual harassment, the analysis suggests comprehensive awareness programs in educational institutions, workplaces, and public spaces. Providing guidelines and education on sexual harassment laws to the youth is essential to ensure greater awareness and prevention.
Moreover, the study acknowledges the role of social media, online platforms, and print media in raising awareness about sexual harassment and creating a broader dialogue about the issue.
Despite the challenges in navigating social and cultural differences and changing mentalities, the study underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between the government, judiciary, law enforcement, and civil society to maintain law and order and create a safer environment for all public transport users. |
